Any business that wishes to grow needs to have the ability to recruit the right people for the right role, after all, our team members are a business’s biggest asset. It is for this reason that we thought to write an article on just this for the series on great business management tools for SMEs.
Doing this correctly is a professional skill and large organisations can afford to hire HR/recruitment specialists to handle this, however it will help in your earlier years of growth to know just a few of the basic principles. These then are just a few tips that can assist with recruiting the right people – for the right job…
Get the job description right
When advertising for the position it is essential that the job description accurately matches what the role entails so that you get the right people (with the right skills) applying. If the job description is misleading, it will cause much frustration for both the business and interested applicants, wasting valuable resources and potentially employing the wrong person.
The CV
Scrutinize the CV’s received to see if the necessary effort has been made in the presentation thereof, that it provides a good professional profile of the applicant and all the information you need (clearly focusing on the skills, values and their experience and how this will be of value to the role and overall business).
The interview
Fully utilize the interview process, ensuring that you measure the right things in the short space of time you have.
Preparation is key to the success of the interview process!
Prepare scenaorio based questions, asking the applicant how they have previously performed or acted in a similar situation. Your questions must be focused on the skills, values, knowledge and experience you are looking for! Do not waste your time asking certain questions (we all know those ones on the internet, which everyone has access to and can easily prepare for) which often provides you with no valuable information.
Ensure the process is fair, asking all applicants the same questions and no questions that could be regarded as discriminatory.
Include assessements to measure key skills you require. For the example, if it is imperative for the person to have advanced Excel skills, then simply asking them about their skill in the interview is not sufficient. Set up an Excel assessment after the interview to see their skills in action.
